Late XIX Century, during the industrial revolution, Chilean Patagonia was populated by pioneers from UK, Germany, Spain, Croatia amongst other countries. In 1906 a society formed by some of the pioneers decided to build the biggest most modern cold storage plant for lamb meet in all of Latin America. All the machinery, bricks and furniture were brought from the UK. It took until 1915 to complete the work; hence we are celebrating the 100-year-old anniversary this year 2015. And Puerto Natales was built in 1911, 5.5Km south of the plant so that the workers could live near work.
For more than 50 years it was a thriving industry, it is said that during the Second World War, must of the meat that arrived to Europe came from this cold storage plant. It was a centrepiece of life in this part of Patagonia, employing hundreds and establishing a strong industrial presence in the region. People brought their families, commerce started booming, tourism started developing and a new community of both Chileans and foreigners became the new inhabitants of this land. Chilean Patagonia at last started to develop and have a local identity.
But after the Second World War the persistent decrease in the demand of lamb brought this era to an end. And in the early 70’s the cold storage plant was abandoned and caught fire, with merely half of its past glory remaining intact.
Two families, one of British decent and another of Spanish decent who’s ancestors had been pioneers in Patagonia and had both been directly involved in the cold storage plant, wanted to be sure this piece of Patagonian history was preserved. The building was declared a national monument in 1996 due to its historical relevance. Both families decided to restore all the old machinery that was still scattered around the area and create a museum inside the national monument as well as whole concept around it that later became known as The Singular Patagonia, a luxury hotel where people could get a deeper understanding and feel of the history of Chilean Patagonia.
